Listening for confession in contemporary culture

Writing for an essay on invitation to repentance in the liturgy, I have been observing "confession" in contemporary culture. Here are two interesting finds:

1. Fail / Martin L. Gore:

Our souls are corrupt
our minds are messed up
our consciences bankrupt
oh, we're f*cked

(Depeche Mode, Spirit [Columbia Records, 2017])

2. Kyrie / Franz Wright:

I had such a good time and I don’t regret anything—
What happened to the prayer that goes like that?

(Franz Wright, Wheeling Motel [New York: Knopf, 2009], p. 7)
